Yuri Trutnev visited a Floating Nuclear Power Plant in Chukotka

During a working visit to the Chukotka Autonomous District, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yuri Trutnev inspected a Floating Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) based on the “Akademik Lomonosov” power unit in Pevek. The inspection was attended by Chukotka Autonomous District Governor Vladislav Kuznetsov and representatives of the Pevek city administration.

"For Chukotka, the floating nuclear power plant is life. Life in the Far North is hardly possible without heat and energy. The floating nuclear power plant opens up new opportunities for development. Yesterday, we discussed the Baimskaya ore zone development project. Its development is impossible without energy. So, thank you to everyone who works at the plant," said Yuri Trutnev. To replace the decommissioned capacity of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, provide energy to consumers of the Chaun-Bilibino power hub in the Chukotka Autonomous District, and to provide energy to the main mining companies located in the Chaun-Bilibino power hub in western Chukotka—a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimskaya ore zone—the State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom” has implemented an investment project in Pevek to build a floating nuclear power plant. The floating nuclear power plant includes a Floating Nuclear Power Unit (hereinafter referred to as the “Akademik Lomonosov” Floating Nuclear Power Unit - FNPU) with two KLT-40S reactors, providing electrical and thermal energy with a capacity of 70 MW and 50 Gcal/h, respectively. The onshore infrastructure is designed to distribute thermal and electrical energy from the FNPU to consumers. The expected service life of the Floating Nuclear Power Unit is 40 years. Refueling is performed once every three years; the first such operation at its permanent base was conducted in 2023.
