Digital breakthrough in geology: ZabSU scientists are creating a new generation of deposit exploration technologies

Zabaykal State University (ZabSU) is developing a digital platform for forecasting mineral deposits using artificial intelligence technologies. The project, implemented as part of the "Priority 2030. Far East" strategic academic leadership program, will significantly improve the efficiency of geological exploration, reduce costs for subsoil users, and accelerate the search for new deposits in the Far East.

The "Priority 2030. Far East" program is being implemented by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East. The Far East and Arctic Development Corporation (FEDC) supports participating universities and facilitates their interactions with enterprises in the real economy.

Today, finding new deposits remains a lengthy and expensive process. Mining companies spend years exploring promising areas, but a significant portion of sites identified using traditional methods fail to confirm the presence of commercial mineral reserves. Additional challenges arise from large volumes of archival geological data, the manual processing of which takes months or even years, as well as from limited access to foreign digital technologies.

Scientists at Zabaykal State University are proposing a fundamentally different approach. Instead of manual data processing, they are creating a unified digital geoinformation system that will integrate geological data, satellite images, and research results. Artificial intelligence will enable significantly faster data analysis, identifying promising areas, and generating recommendations for geological exploration. According to the developers, forecasting accuracy could reach 90%.
