The Northern Sea Gate of Russia and the largest transport hub: the potential of the Murmansk region was discussed at the “Russia” exhibition

On December 22, the Day of the Murmansk Region was held at the International Exhibition and Forum "Russia". The head of the Ministry of Eastern Development of Russia, Alexey Chekunkov, spoke at the plenary session. He noted that the Murmansk region is a flagship for the development of the Russian Arctic: “For our country, the Arctic zone is a geostrategic border area. Taking into account the presence of a developed transport infrastructure in the region, a rich resource base, a temperate Arctic climate and unique nature, the Murmansk region is a place of attraction for our citizens both for permanent residence and tourism.” According to Alexey Chekunkov, the Murmansk Region is the leader in attracting investments among all regions of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. The preferential regimes created here in 2020 attracted 219 residents of the Arctic zone and 7 residents of the “Capital of the Arctic” ASEZ; investment projects worth more than 390 billion rubles are being implemented here. “The implementation of investment projects in the Murmansk region directly affects the development of the Northern Sea Route and the increase in cargo traffic along this transport artery. At the end of 2023, it is predicted that the established target cargo turnover along the Northern Sea Route will be achieved at 36 million tons. This is a record value in the entire history of Russia,” the minister said.
