Russia and India are strengthening cooperation on the development of the “Vladivostok-Chennai” sea corridor

Russia and India intend to intensify transport links with each other and are considering the possibility of developing the Far East-Chennai sea route. The development of this route, connecting the ports of Russia and India, is discussed by the authorities of the two states at the first working seminar, which was held recently in India. The discussion was attended by Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Eastern Development of the Russian Federation Anatoly Bobrakov, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways of India Sarbananda Sonowal, as well as representatives of business and relevant government agencies of the two countries. From India, the seminar brought together more than 100 participants. The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Eastern Development headed the Russian delegation, consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Eastern Development of the Russian Federation, the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and Arctic (FEDC), as well as representatives of the regions of the Far East and Arctic and business. Anatoly Bobrakov noted: “We plan to develop a sea line between the Indian port of Chennai and Vladivostok, which can be used for transporting coal, oil, liquefied natural gas, fertilizers, containers and other types of cargo with the possibility of calling at other Russian and international ports. The route will reduce the delivery time of goods to Russia by 16 days. If today it takes 40 days for cargo to reach Russia through the Suez Canal, then through the eastern corridor this time will be reduced to 24 days, by 40%, and this proves the need for the development of this corridor.” The Eastern Sea Corridor between ports on India's east coast and Russia's Far East region promises "huge potential" for new trade opportunities, India's Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said. India-Russia bilateral trade reached $50 billion in the fiscal year 2022-23 (ended March 31) and is expected to increase in the current corresponding period, he said.
