Participants of the Maritime Congress proposed solutions for attracting young professionals to the maritime industry

The plenary session of the Youth Maritime Forum, "Youth for the Far East Maritime Industry: Building the Future Together," was held at the FEFU campus in Vladivostok as part of the "Maritime Congress – Far East 2026" business program. The key topic of discussion was finding effective mechanisms for attracting and retaining young professionals in the region's maritime industry. Participants discussed employers' actual needs for graduates of specialized universities, the development of social infrastructure in coastal areas, and tools for engaging young scientists in addressing the industry's priority challenges. The Far East and Arctic Development Corporation (FEDC) is participating in the Maritime Congress.

Kirill Klimenko, Director of the Human Resources Development Department at the Far East and Arctic Development Corporation, spoke at the plenary session. He presented an up-to-date snapshot of the regional workforce situation, noting that the average labor shortage relative to job creation among residents of priority development areas and the Free Port of Vladivostok exceeds 30%, with the greatest shortages observed in shipbuilding, logistics, and related industries.

"The participation of Far Eastern colleges in the 'Professionality' project is helping us build a new industry-specific training model aligned with market demands. Thirty-six educational and industrial clusters are already operating in the Far Eastern Federal District, including a maritime transport cluster established at the Admiral G.I. Nevelskoy Maritime State University. 3.7 billion rubles have been allocated from the federal budget for infrastructure equipment and repairs. Furthermore, over the past three years, 447 modern workshops have been created using funds from the Unified Presidential Subsidy, 12 of which are specialized for the maritime industry. For example, a "Vessel General Design Laboratory" and a "Marine High-Voltage Equipment Laboratory" have been established at the Kamchatka Marine Energy College, and a workshop for unmanned aerial systems will open this year. A laboratory for "Optimization of Cargo Transportation and Storage Processes" and a "Digital Metal Processing Testing Range" have been opened at the Vladivostok Shipbuilding College, noted Kirill Klimenko.

He also added that the Corporation is focusing on early career guidance. 1,695 assessments have already been conducted using the FEDC methodology, 616 targeted training agreements have been signed, and 18 specialized classes for schoolchildren have been established.

"By combining the resources of business, education, and the government through 'Professionality,' we will fill the fleet with professionals," Kirill Klimenko concluded.
