Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East: Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky will become one of the main ports of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor

The VI Sustainable Development Forum in Kamchatka featured a session titled "Kamchatka, the Route to the North: Foresight for the Development of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor," dedicated to the prospects of the Northern Sea Route and the region's role in international logistics. During the event, Ilya Chernov, Director of the Department for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation and the Implementation of Infrastructure Projects at the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, discussed the development of the Northern Sea Route and noted that Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky will become one of the main ports of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor.

In his speech, Ilya Chernov, Director of the Department for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation and the Implementation of Infrastructure Projects at the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, noted that cargo turnover along the Northern Sea Route increased from 4 to 38 million tons between 2014 and 2024. In 2025, cargo turnover will be comparable to the 2024 level. Foreign trade cargo dominates the cargo turnover structure, accounting for 86%. This includes hydrocarbons. There has been an increase in cargo transiting the NSR to 3.2 million tons (+3.8%), including over 400,000 tons on container voyages, the number of which has increased from 7 to 24 over the past three years.

According to the speaker, the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor will include both Northwest and Far East ports. Given the experience of Kamchatka and the projects being implemented on the peninsula, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky will become one of the main ports of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor.
