The meeting of the State Council Commission was held in Moscow under the chairmanship of the Governor of the Murmansk Region Andrey Chibis.
In accordance with the President's instructions following the International Arctic Forum, the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, together with the State Council Commission, prepared proposals to update the Strategy for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation and Ensuring National Security for the Period up to 2035.
The updated strategy proposes to expand the planning horizons to 2050. Key priorities have been identified that reflect Russia's long-term interests in the Arctic. Among them are: (1) rational development of the resource base with priority given to deep processing and high environmental standards; (2) accelerated development of the Northern Sea Route and the Transarctic Transport Route; (3) renovation of key supporting settlements; (4) protection of the original habitat and traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of the North as the basis for the cultural sustainability of the Arctic; (5) environmental safety and adaptation to climate change, including permafrost monitoring, environmental projects, and the creation of sustainable infrastructure.
