Major museum construction projects in the Far East: how infrastructure modernization will change the role of museums in the macro-region

The Primorsky Museum Assembly was held in Vladivostok. This year, the forum served as a venue for an off-site meeting of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East on the creation and implementation of new museum concepts in the Far East.

Participants discussed modern approaches to museum design, challenges, and practical solutions for overcoming them during the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects in the macroregion. Museum concepts developed for the construction of new buildings were presented by the National Museum of the Republic of Buryatia, the Far Eastern Art Museum, the Kamchatka Regional United Museum, the A.K. Kuznetsov Transbaikal Regional Museum of Local History, and the Magadan Regional Museum of Local History.

We heard the concepts of museums that are currently under construction or preparing to begin construction. All the projects presented, with the exception of Kamchatka and Magadan Regions, are funded through the state program of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East. We see how museum spaces are being transformed into full-fledged cultural and educational clusters. The development of museums is a key focus for the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and the Far East and Arctic Development Corporation (FEDC). Our goal is to provide methodological and coordination support to ensure that each new museum becomes a magnet for residents and tourists," said Grigory Smolyak, Director of the Department of Social Development of the Far East and Arctic at the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East.
