Alexey Chekunkov held a meeting on energy development in Kamchatka

Minister for Development of the Far East and Arctic Alexey Chekunkov held a meeting in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the development of the regional energy complex. Projects aimed at replacing coal and fuel oil with modern and efficient energy generation technologies were discussed. “For Kamchatka, supplying efficient energy is a challenge. The region is isolated from the federal network. Therefore, it is important that innovative solutions and new technologies are used here. Thanks to new trends of work, in about five years the structure of Kamchatka’s energy supply should change dramatically,” noted Alexey Chekunkov. Several ways of work were discussed. The first is liquefied natural gas. Kamchatka is the eastern gateway of the northern sea route; large volumes of liquefied natural gas will be transshipped here. Part of the transported volume will be directed to the needs of Kamchatka and will meet the needs of residents and enterprises of the region. Another strategic direction for the development of Kamchatka’s energy complex is the expansion of the use of geothermal resources. The issue of constructing a new geothermal station on the Mutnovsky geothermal field and a small hydroelectric power station on the Tolmacheva River is being considered.
