Alexey Chekunkov on the development of the Arctic: people are always at the forefront

The head of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, Alexey Chekunkov, took part in the plenary session "New Development of the Arctic" of the International Symposium "Creating the Future" in Moscow. The topic of the discussion was the prospects and potential of the Arctic - as a driver for the development of science, technology and the economy of the state. "There are few people living in the Arctic, but it is a quarter of our country's territory and a fifth of the economy and Russian exports. Today, investment projects worth more than 30 trillion rubles are being implemented in the Arctic zone. It is difficult to overestimate the Arctic contribution to Russia's GDP. But I am convinced that the most important role in the development of the Arctic is played by human deeds and the many years of efforts of people who, in extremely difficult conditions, create the basis of our economy here. Northerners who live and work in enterprises, operate icebreakers, and are engaged in scientific research at polar stations. People are always at the forefront,” said Alexey Chekunkov, beginning his speech.
