Alexey Chekunkov: “For the 300th anniversary of Kyakhta, we will prepare a master plan for the development of the city and invite business to develop cross-border tourism”

In Buryatia, the 300th anniversary of the city of Kyakhta will be celebrated in 2027. President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin signed the Decree “On the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the city of Kyakhta.” On February 7, a meeting of the organizing committee was held under the chairmanship of the Head of the Ministry of Eastern Development Alexei Chekunkov to prepare the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the city in 2027. “For several centuries, Kyakhta has played the role that the Far East as a whole plays today, the so-called “turn to the east.” Kyakhta is the capital of the Great Tea Route of Russia. It was Kyakhta, were the famous Chinese tea was weighed, packaged, and delivered by caravans along the Russian line of the trans-border route of the Great Tea Road. And to this day this city carries within itself the memory, historical monuments, and spirit of that prosperous trade between the then Russian Empire and Asia,” noted Alexey Chekunkov. More than 18 thousand people live in Kyakhta. Now this city is famous for its historical heritage, cultural, tourist and recreational potential far beyond the borders of our country. The city has retained its historical appearance as an ancient border merchant town, and its proximity to Mongolia serves as the Russian gateway to Asia.
