Head of the Ministry for the Development of the Far East Alexey Chekunkov visited the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute

Minister of the Russian Federation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic Alexei Chekunkov visited the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), located in St. Petersburg. The Institute conducts research activities in the Arctic and Antarctic: from research during expeditions and data processing to mapping and forecasting natural processes. The Institute has its own fleet, which was replenished last year with the ice-resistant platform "North Pole". In the future, the platform can become a base for conducting complex international expeditions. At the meeting of Alexei Chekunkov with AARI Director Alexander Makarov and a team of scientists, a wide range of issues were discussed: preparation and ensuring safe navigation on the Northern Sea Route, the creation of an international research center on the Svalbard archipelago, measures to support research activities in the Arctic region. Special attention during the meeting was paid to the issues of personnel training. “Personnel training, attracting young people to science is a strategic aspect. Young people are fond of the north, the Arctic, become explorers, dedicate their lives to this. The result of their work gives us the opportunity to implement industrial and infrastructure projects that have no analogues in the world and create our Arctic economy,” the minister said.
