On June 24, the expedition "Arctic Floating University-2022: The Changing Arctic" set off from Arkhangelsk to the Arctic Ocean. On board the research vessel "Professor Molchanov" - 55 scientists, graduate students and students. They will make a trip lasting more than three weeks around the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.

In 2022 the Arctic Floating University project marks its 10th anniversary. The Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University, jointly with the Northern branch of the Meteorological and Environmental Monitoring Service, have organized this project every year since 2012.

The expedition’s scientific program includes research in a wide range of areas: climatology and meteorology, microbiology and the study of biodiversity, human adaptation to the working conditions in the Arctic and sociology, and the preservation of the Arctic’s historical and cultural heritage.

The Arctic Floating University project is supported by the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic, the Russian Far East and Arctic Development Corporation, the Government of Arkhangelsk Region, the Russian Geographical Society and the Russian Arctic National Park. VTB Bank, Novatek PJSC and Norilsk Nickel PJSC are sponsors and partners of the expedition.

They will help us to improve the existing programs aimed at preserving the plant and animal life of the region. I would like to emphasize that the development of science and technology and the protection of the environment are all key priorities for the period 2021-2023, when the Russian Federation is chairing the Arctic Council,” said Aleksey Chekunkov, Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic.
