The Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation discussed the energy development program for the Far East

Head of the Ministry of Eastern Development Alexey Chekunkov took part in a joint meeting of the State Council Commission on Energy and the Coordination Council of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation on National Projects and National Conservation. Presidential Aide Igor Levitin, representatives of federal executive authorities, constituent entities of the Russian Federation, energy companies, scientific associations and experts attended the commission meeting, chaired by Kuzbass Governor Sergei Tsivilev. The issues of preparing a program for the development of the electric power industry in the Far Eastern Federal District until 2050, as well as project financing mechanisms for the creation of energy infrastructure, were discussed. “Today, over 300 generation facilities with a total installed electrical capacity of 18.5 GW are in operation in the Far East. The largest share in the total generation volume of the Far Eastern Federal District is traditionally occupied by thermal power plants,” said Alexey Chekunkov. According to the Minister, the main problem of the electric power industry in the macroregion is the high wear and tear of the electric power infrastructure, due to which the efficiency of thermal power plants in the Far East is 30% lower than the Russian average, and losses in electric networks are 9.5%. Another key problem for the Far East is the high level of electricity prices for consumers. Alexey Chekunkov said that, on behalf of the President, the modernization and renewal of the energy industry in the Far East will be carried out according to a special Program until 2050. “The key directions of the future Program for the development of the electric power industry of the Far East for the period until 2050, in our opinion, should be: the construction of an energy bridge fr om the IPS of Siberia to the IPS of the East, the construction of flood control hydroelectric power stations, the modernization of inefficient thermal power plants, the conversion of inefficient coal-fired thermal power plants to gas, the construction of low power nuclear power plants in areas, wh ere it seems economically feasible, implementation of regional programs for modernization of the electrical grid complex,” the minister added.
